What is FSSAI License?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been constituted by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare with a stringent visualisation to implement FSS act on food business activities. FSSAI was formed to keep a single point of contact for all the food operators. The role & responsibility of FSSAI is to make sure that all food related laws are being followed by food business operators.

FSSAI has defined a common procedure for all food operators to apply for applicable food License. FSSAI license/registration has three categories. An FBO can identify the required license type basis on its business category & turnover.

What are the various FSSAI categories for license?

FSSAI has 3 categories based on Annual turnover:

1. Registration

For Business with turnover below Rs. 12 Lac Annually.

2. State License

For Business with turnover between Rs. 12 Lac to Rs. 20 Cr annually. Or/additionally

What is the categories based on production capacity?

On the basis of production capacity.

FSSAI Registration – 100kgs per day

FSSAI State License – 100kgs to 2 mt tons per day

FSSAI Central License – above 2 mt tons per day

Where does one apply for FSSAI?

FSSAI Application has to be applied online as well as physical submission of documents has to be submitted to the nearest FDA office from your area.

FSSAI Central License is a complete online procedure with no physical submission.

What documents are required?

The below are the documents mentioned in FAQ’s on FSSAI License

FSSAI Registration – about 3-5 documents are required

FSSAI State/Central License – about 15-20 documents are required

Whether there will be a single or different license for the same premises if they are multiple licenses for different product by same FBO?

There will be different license issued under FSSA as requirement of each product is different.

So in the same premises if license is being taken for processing of meat, milk & fruits & vegetables, there will be a separate license as these will be done in separate portions & businesses are not connected.

However, in case there is fruit & vegetable processing & godown/ store along with it, since these are connected activities, one license is applicable.

What is meant by Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS)?

A Food Safety Management System (FSMS) is a network of interrelated elements that combine to ensure that food does not cause adverse human health effects.

These elements include programs, plans, policies, procedures, practices, processes, goals, objectives, methods, controls, roles, responsibilities, relationships, documents, records, and resources.

It is a mandatory document while applying for license.
